The pointer, sometimes known as the English pointer or
British pointer, is a very specialist bird dog that is mainly
used for dogging partridges in short agricultural crops or
grouse on heather moors. Frequently worked as a brace, they
come in several colour combinations including black and white,
liver and white, lemon and white and orange and white, as well
as self-coloured individuals.
Other dogs with the word "pointer" in their names, tend to
be classified as HPR (Hunt, Point, Retrieve) breeds rather
than as true pointers. Examples are the German short-haired
pointer and German wire-haired pointer.
